REPOTTING DAY

While watering my seedlings this morning I noticed that several of the sprouts were showing a LOT of leg, so I decided to repot them:

NASTURTIUMS, ZINNIAS, and COSMOS are getting leggy
CABBAGES & SQUASHES are reaching for the sky!
Time to repot everything atop the Baker's rack ... sorry the pics are tilted: on a ladder and I hate ladders!

I know gardening {experts} will tell you not to repot legging starts – tomato plants being the exception, but I repot everything if they aren’t going outside soon; and here, right now, it is raining cats and dogs, so my transplants won’t be outside until the end of the month. ALL the leggy upstarts need news homes until their moving day …

I slightly dampened potting soil for repotting – this way I know the plants will be getting a good start in their new pot.
After the sprouts are moved into their new temporary home, I gently encircle repotted plant with finger & thumb – not squeezing, just giving support – and gently backfill with dampened potting soil to about half an inch from leaves
Already looking much better and stronger. Now they have room to grow a bit more before going outdoors ;-)
Oh boy! Look at that Yellow Straight-neck Squash! It is showing some serious leg …
I ran outside and grabbed this larger pot; it looks deep enough to hold the squash for another week.
The Yellow Straight-neck Squash already has a good root system going on, so I think it will not suffer too much transplant shock.
And the Yellow Straight-neck Squash is showing its 2nd set of leaves too ...
The ZUCCHINI was also repotted. Don’t they both look a lot happier?
Everything that went back atop the Baker's Rack was repotted.

After the veggie sprouts were repotted, I slipped them back atop the Baker’s Rack, under the skylight in the kitchen. The transplants should hold for about a week – then it is outside for them in the garden.

Then it was time to repot the leggy flower seedlings:

This lively Nasturtium has outgrown its seedling paper planting pot; definitely time to repot it ...
Now the rambunctious Nasturtium rambler should be able to spread its roots happily in this new pot until it can get outside in its permanent home.

There were several more cheeky sprouts showing leg, and I realized I had no more pots – anywhere! And I did not want to drive into town just to buy a pack of Styrofoam cups. Now what? Well, desperation is the mother of all invention, so I figured I could improvise on the smaller paper pot concept … so I did:-D

I did not have any more plastic potting pots, so I improvised-on-the-spot a larger paper pot with newspaper and a spool of cotton crochet thread: a gal’s gotta do what a gal’s gotta do ;-)
I folded the newspaper to a guesstimate size – with the lower edge enforced with a small overlap, and started rolling the newspaper around the thread spool.
I didn’t roll the paper around the spool too snug though, because I still have to remove the spool ... but not yet!
I then folded the bottom edges in on themselves and snugly tucked them under to make a firm bottom for the paper pot.
Satisfied with MOD DIY paper pot, I removed the thread spool and filled my pot with soil and transplants. Easy-peasy!

Transplanting done for today, I started watering the rest of my sprouts …

SCALLIONS & LEEKS coming up.

MARIGOLDS are showing good and holding steady
FENNEL breaking soil
Eleven repotted flowers in MOD DIY PAPER POTS and a repurposed fried chicken container; LOL - NASTURTIUMS, ZINNIAS & COSMOS. And I switched window layouts around to accommodate repots.
All flower seedlings are showing green growth. And window placement layouts have been switched around to accommodate repots.
CANTALOUPE & WATERMELON breaking soil.

I can’t wait for the sun to show itself so I can get outside and get these babies into the planter boxes Bob built for me!

DOING THE HAPPY DANCE!

That miserable, murdering moron next door has put his house up for sale and will be moving!
((((THANK YOU ELOHIM!!!!))))

When Amy told me this good news earlier today, I instantly felt a heavy weight slide off my shoulders and I felt rejuvenated; and teared up with thanksgiving, saying, “Thank You, Yeshua!”
All murders do not have dripping bloody hands ... but all murders DO have blood on their hands. And Ron's hands would be glowing brightly if they were sprayed with luminol spray. First his selfish actions caused the death of his wife … and 2 weeks later, he and Candy put actions in motion that directly led to my husband’s death 3-1/2 months later - the crumbs of our shattered life leads directly back to those 2 evil twins.
GLAD TO SEE HIM PULLING UP STAKES and taking his snaky self outta here.
His moving is a direct answer to prayer.
Now if Candy Scott would follow him, I'd kiss the sky :-D

A LITTLE FURTHER DOWN THE LINE

Today I actually left the comfort zone I shrouded myself with following Bob’s physical death in December 2018 ... I drove over the Coal Creek backroads to Castle Rock; about 45 minutes one way – the little store there has the best mixed green salads, and I felt like eating one today ;-) I took the backroads because there is less stress on country roads than going through town and onto the freeway. Bob and I always took the backroads. He preferred the freeway which is faster, but stuck to the backroads for my peace of mind: freeways are just too frantic for me. I avoid them whenever possible.

The weather behaved and the drive was relaxing. The only upsetting part was when I somehow tripped the dome light and could not figure how to turn it off! So, I texted Alex with a "Help!" text, followed by a short video showing him the light, the little doodads surrounding it, and explaining the situation. The car is a touch-start car and everything about it confuses me because Bob didn't get around to showing me how to operate the darned thing before - well, you know. I don't know that I will ever figure out how to operate the car past starting it and driving it. Bob had confidence in me that I would eventually “get it” with difficult things, but right now my brain is misfiring and/or going on strike when I need Bob’s boost of confidence.

I know it sounds lame, but I AM lame right now: my mind doesn't switch gears like it used to 7 months ago. When I get into a stressful situation in the moment happening n.o.w., a brain freeze settles in, and all I can do is squeak out a feeble, "Help!" Sometimes I am rendered speechless; or actually start to stutter. Over little things. Totally not me; at least, not the me I used to be before I became a widow and all common sense/logical conclusions apparently flew out the top of my head. Even my daughter is confused and constantly tells people, "This is not my mother's normal behavior. Trust me; this woman can wage war with one hand and hold the fort with the other. Nothing stops her from something she sets her mind to doing." I sure wish I was, right now, that woman ... that other me ... Bob and Stacey remember. I sure could use her fortitude.

Anyway.

I have to drive to Eden Valley next month and I need to be able to drive more than 5 minutes into downtown here - I need to be comfortable driving 2 hours straight without falling apart.

So today was the beginning of spreading my wings, seeing past tunnel vision, and moving a little further down the line.

Aside from the dome light snafu, it went pretty well ;-)

MAGIC MAN - Best 45 years of My Life

44 years ago, today, Bob called me for our 1st real date ... the all-night chat session at his house in March 1974 where Doug Moss threw the kegger and I carded him, was not a 'date' - it was happenstance. And Doug and I ended whatever it was we had together too that night - he pretty much knew just by watching Bob & I talk that he was history; but Bob was still officially married, though he and Gloria had been separated since November 1973 ... and she was openly living with another fella. When Bob walked me home - 5 minutes away - to make my midnight curfew (and he ducked into Mickey's Tavern before going back home), I made it clear to him that I would not be a backdoor girl and that though I was happy to finally meet him and get to know him, I would not get involved in a marital mess. If they decided to get divorced, he could call me: but not until then. I would permanently be unavailable as long as he was married. Gloria was Jehovah's Witness, so she was dragging her feet on ending the marriage even though she was actively involved in adultery.

I know, it didn't make any sense to me either ...

Anyway, Bob put it to her that the nonsense had to stop and that he had the right to move on with his life too. She filed for divorce on April 1st, 1974. I got the phone call April 15th asking me out for Friday, the 19th. I accepted.

Then I went into the kitchen where my mother was making Supper and asked, "Mom, what is the oldest age I can date a guy?" She said, "21". And I answered with a lie because I wanted to go out with my dream man - "He is exactly that  - 21 years old!" She must have heard something in my voice because she looked at me and asked, "Who is this guy 'exactly 21'?" I told her "Bob Hargand": and she immediately said, "No! You are not going out with him; I know who he is, and he is married." She also knew his actual age was 24; and I was 17. Well, I dug my heels in and said, "He is getting a divorce Mom; his wife is living with another man. And I am going with him when he comes for me Friday after work. I love him Mom - I have since I was 10 years old. I am going."

Needless to say, Bob did not get a warm reception when he stepped up on the front porch Friday evening. And I wasn't accepted any warmer at his parent's house later on.

But we didn't care.

We were in love.

From the 1st date ... half of which we spent helping my friends, Debbie & Walt, move into their Longview apartment (no fancy dates for us! It wasn't necessary I be wined and dined: there was never any getting-to-know-you-awkwardness with us) - Bob got drafted into that moving venture and took the change of plans like a trooper ;-) What a guy!

Picture of our first date taken at Debbie & Walt's, relaxing after the move. April 19th, 1974

From that time forward, we were together constantly after Bob got home from work. If the woods shut down early due to fire danger, or an accident on the landing, Bob was waiting for me after school on school days (by the Park - he was not allowed on school property because he was in his 20's) ... and off we'd go; first to stop at Skamokawa Cemetery to put fresh flowers on Timmy's grave (my cousin who had recently died: Timmy and I were close cousins), then either do some backroad driving which I loved, or I'd caddy for him if he felt like a game of golf (he later taught me how to golf and I enjoyed it too). Sometimes we'd go dancing at a couple night spots (I had a fake ID I had never used until then - and it was never questioned when I was with my 6'2" gentle giant: they figured if I was with him, I was old enough :-D ).

Basically I was just sleeping at home by this time.

Both sets of parents were frowning and grumbling.

We were deaf and blind to the complaints and sour puss looks: we were not going to let them come between us.

It was like we had always been a couple. We completed each other - we never had to work at building a relationship; everything just fell into place. By July 1974 the divorce was final and Gloria was remarried.

And we got married - against BOTH parental objections in August 1974. Our daughter was born May 1975 - when pregnancy was confirmed (I was determined I had "the flu" - Bob knew otherwise and insisted I make an appointment with the Dr.), I asked Bob want he wanted this time around. He said, "I have a son, I'd like a girl this time." Bob got his wish, and he was proud as could be when his little girl was born. We did not know until she was 18 months old that her immune system was flawed and that every time she got her vaccines the vaccines would nearly kill her. Seriously - we did almost lose her one morning; if it had not been for Bob's skillful race-car driving tactics, we wouldn't have made the hospital in time. We lived in Cathlamet at the time, which is at least 30-45 minutes away (depending on who is driving), and he got us from home to ER in 10 minutes flat. She never got another vaccine.

Doug Moss, my junior-high/high school on-again-off-again boyfriend remained a lifelong friend of ours, oftentimes rushing me to the hospital ER with Stacey when Bob was working and I needed a ride into Longview. It was Bob, after work one night that brought the news home to me of Doug's death 20/21 years ago - he didn't want me to hear about it from anyone else.

That was the kind of man Bob was.

The dream man who casually breezed past an unseen gawking 10 year old girl with stars in her eyes became her magic man and never ceased to think about her comfort/peace of mind, delight her, or work at pleasing her until his dying day in 2018 ;-)

Thank you GOD for giving me this man for a blessing!

Thank you David Almer for rushing Bob across Cathlamet's Main Street to meet me ... I wish I had paid closer attention then. LOL!

Thank you Doug Moss for insisting I be at that kegger: I shudder to think what my life could have been had I turned it down!

Thank you Bob for finally seeing me all grown up; and for loving me unconditionally, talking me into marrying you, and giving me the best 44 years of my entire life :-D

Done deal! And we never regretted our spur-of-the-moment Justice of the Peace marriage at Judge Hall’s home at 9 p.m. August 27th, 1974 :-D

I love you Babe.

Always have - always will.

GARDEN PLANTING KICKOFF

This morning, while the coffee was perking, I checked on my seedlings and was very pleased to see that quite a bit more have stuck their heads out of the potting soil and are stretching themselves to get the kinks out and unfurl their tender leaves … kinda like newborn babies :-D

Veggie sprouts from atop the kitchen Baker’s rack: Collards & Cabbages.
Wa Wa Tsai was the first to break through the other day, (https://jeastofeden.blogspot.com/2019/04/sets-sprouts.html), so they are a little sturdier; and I turned their pots this morning to keep their trunks straight while they reach for the warm sunlight from the skylight above.

And in the livingroom, where seedlings are misted and kept cozy in front of the sunny windows in a plastic bin atop an old long coffee table hoarded specifically for this purpose, the flower seedlings are also waking up and unfurling in the warm sun rays that spill through the windows and urge them to “Hurry and outgrow that incubator so you can get outside where you will be much happier!” …

Bonanza Marigolds - following picture is what they will look like when they mature outside. Marigolds are such peppy little flowers ...
Colossus Marigolds & Bachelor Buttons coming up: I seeded the blue Bachelor Buttons only this year because I will interplant them with colorful Whiligig Zinnias
Colossus Marigold - I never have too many marigolds ;-)
Bachelor Buttons
Sprouting Whirligig Zinnias
Don’t you agree these colorful Whirligig Zinnia ladies will look real nice interplanted with the blue Bachelors?
Xanthos Cosmos waking up
Pale Yellow Xanthos Cosmos – when the pink cosmos decides to sprout and grow, these 2 will be interplanted: I think they will complement each other ;-)

After the coffee perked and the seedlings were misted to keep them happy in their warm environments, I drank a quick cup of coffee and ran to the back bedroom to hastily throw something on to garden in. As I was walking out of the bedroom, I caught a glimpse of Bob’s cap atop his cremains box on the dresser, and decided on the spur of the moment to put it on and wear it while I worked outside; he always wore it and I wanted a part of him with me today when the sunshine is beckoning and I will be breaking soil. I always get excited on the first day of actual gardening and Bob always got a kick out of my excitement.

I wanted him with me today – and his cap was a small way of having his presence with me …

I know what I look like – I was never beautiful; I will never be beautiful – and that is okay with me. I am comfortable in my own skin. Bob thought I was beautiful and always told me he thought I was beautiful: that is good enough for me. His opinion is the only one that maters to me.
I have baby-fine hair which does not have much volume to it no matter what marketers say their products can/will do to beef up fine hair. My pathetic graying ponytail was pulled through the back of Bob's Cap - it’s gonna be warm being active  outside and I don’t want it sticking to my neck. And the cap settles on my head better too with it like this.
Dressed and ready to get dirty :-D Let’s do this Babe!
Yay! Yellow, Red, & White Onion sets in place. I hope I left enough space behind the back rows for the cosmos’ to be put in place next month.
Shelling & Stir-fry Peas planted. I steadied my cute light-weight trellis’ in the garden box with wooden garden stakes secured to their ends with baling wire and pushed snugly into the soil – thanks Babe for patiently showing me how to use baling wire when I had my little homestead setup on Merritt Drive 10 years ago ;-) Hopefully today's trellis setup will withstand the gusty river winds that blow through here.
Violets freely reseed, so my garden boxes and the river rock in back of the house was running wild with blooming violets. I don’t want violets eating up vegetable space in my garden boxes, so I transplanted several of them to my Patio Apple Tree containers. They look well together; and the violets can always be removed if they start hindering the trees. God knows, there is no shortage of violets. LOL

And that is all we did today; these things I know can withstand a surprise hail storm and fluctuating Spring temperatures. I will get the rest in when the weather is more stable. There was quite a bit of pollen on the breeze while I dinked around in my garden area; I have environmental asthma and I can get a little breathless with heavy air pollutants - like whipped up pollen, which is great for things that need pollinated ... it just isn't so good for me when my lungs get irritated and inflamed. But I am not going to stop gardening! Gardening comforts me; and I need a LOT of comfort in my life since Bob graduated from Earth to Heaven.

For right now, the onions are keeping me hopping - every time I look out the window I see one or two lying down on the job >;-P As the soil warms, the onions pop out of place and fall over, so I have been constantly going outside to lovingly scold them and put them back in place.

If my sprouting seedling are like newborn babies ... onion sets are like unruly toddlers.

And both will keep this 62 year old widowed granny busy for awhile before they can stand on their own :-D

I need busy right now.

I accept the challenge ;-)
