Yesterday afternoon (a precisely 1:18 – my cell
phone says so ;-)) I was reaching for a frozen roast to put in the
crockpot, when my phone notified me of an incoming message: “Hey grandma, it’s
Liam. I have a question.” My fingers flew over the keypad … “Fire away” … then,
I squealed like an excited kid on
Christmas Day, and shoved the roast back into the freezer when my eyes read, “Alyna
and I are at the courthouse to pick up the Marriage License and we’re getting married
today, would you like to be there?”
WOULD I LIKE TO BE THERE?
I’ve only been waiting for 3 years for this day!
Of course, I happily tapped out, “YES!”; followed
by, “should I leave now?”
And was told, “No, it’s a last minute thing. I’ll
keep you updated, but be ready.”
So, I got ready – December had surprised me, for sure :-D
I had just enough time to change out of my
kick-around-the-house-being-lazy clothes, wash my hair – and blow dry it; when
I received the word: “Ready”. And that small allowance of time to pull myself
together, fit for socializing, was more than Bob and I gave our parents and friends
on our Wedding day.
Karma, baby.
I jumped into the car and sped off – not speeding
enough to warrant a ticket, but I wasn’t wasting time either ;-)
By the time I made Sauvie’s Island, it was dark.
I didn’t have to wait very long … and when
they arrived, Alyna drove my car from Sauvie’s Island – and Liam was in her
car, following us. I have GOT to find a backroads way to drive from here to
there, so there isn’t all this double-driving that eats up time and gas.
Anyway.
We had a little bit of a wait, again, when we
arrived at their apartment: Liam had somehow fallen faaaar back behind us enroute
…
Bride Alyna. I KNOW Bob was with us yesterday. He wouldn't have missed this for anything: no matter what.
Ah! When the groom showed, he came bearing
flowers :-D
While Alyna was getting dressed and putting
finishing touches on her makeup, Liam was waiting for his family to show up,
and visiting with his and Alyna’s friend – who would be officiating. I also
learned Liam’s birth Name:
Groom, Liam Sundancer Lamb. About 3 years ago, Liam proposed to our granddaughter in the cutest way ... and came to our home to ask Bob for her hand in marriage. Bob liked that - and Liam was as good as "in" already :-D Bob and Liam were always comfortable around each other. Liam is a good grandson-in-law.
Liam & Alyna's friend, Ash.
When Alyna came out of the bedroom, I liked the
dress she was wearing: it was SO ‘her’; it fit their low-key,
laid-back Home Wedding. In THAT she carrying forward ‘family tradition’ – and
I started that tradition, if you want to called it that, in 1974, when I
married her grandfather in a dress off the rack instead of a bridal gown (fancy
dress never appealed to me, and Bob was glad he didn’t have to wear a ‘monkey
suit’ again); and her mother didn’t have a bridal gown either when she
married Alyna’s father. The dress Alyna wore, fit, all the way around.
And no one had time to spruce up – everyone was
surprised, and didn’t have time to do more than change clothes and get there.
Alyna, as it should be with every Bride, shone in
her fancy dress; nothing elaborate, but fitting for the event …
And then, in a matter of minutes, the ties that
bind was getting wrapped up ;-)
What a good way to start life in a new home :-D
They are still in the process of unpacking, but the best things in life
happen while life is unfolding; right?
DONE DEAL! What a wonderful Christmas Gift to all families represented, coming together as 1 Family.
Bob was eventually brought out of my purse, and held by us. Bob was a part of this momentous day. After all, there wouldn't have been a Bride if not for Bob ;-) His DNA, though his grandchildren, will continue into the future.
Mr. AND Mrs. Lamb.
Yesterday was fun. Last night was fun.
I’m glad I was invited.
I’m glad I went.
But most of all, I’m glad December surprised me :-D
