2 CORINTHIANS ~ Chapter 11/Thursday Bible Study

As I was finishing up my physical exercises for today …

10 Min Ageless Arms Workout (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYzWrI4Lr70)

I thought how good it is to also exercise our spiritual muscle, so that we can stand strong in The Faith; and cross the Finish Line with victorious confidence 😊

In this study of 2 Corinthians, chapter 11, we will look into the depth of Paul’s love for the Corinthians brethren – and his zeal that they not forget the purity of the Gospel’s simple message.

**********

2 CORINTHIANS ~ Chapter 11

Paul’s Godly Jealousy for the Corinthians

“I wish you would put up with a little folly from me. Please, do be patient with me! I am jealous (protective, watchful, trusting) for you. It is like the jealousy of *Elohim, Himself. I myself espoused (advocated, promoted, championed, backed up) you to one Man, **Christ, presenting you as a chaste (virtuous, faithful) virgin (not yet touched, used, or exploited). Yet I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning (calculating, scheming, inventive, astuteness, trickery), somehow or other your thoughts also will be corrupted and led astray from their simple (straightforward, uncomplicated, clear-cut) devotion to Christ. For if someone comes along and preaches another Jesus that the One we proclaim (declare, state publicly, assert, broadcast, make known), or if you receive a spirit that you had not accepted from us, you will submit to it readily. (vv. 1-4)

Still, I do not consider myself at all inferior to these “outstanding” apostles of yours. And even if I am not a polished speaker, I surely am not lacking in knowledge. For this has been made plain to you in every way, and on every question. Maybe I committed sin when I preached God’s Gospel to you without pay, thereby degrading myself in order that you might be exalted. I did take money from other congregations for my support in order to serve you. When I was with you there were times when I was in need, yet I did not burden any one of you, and my wants were completely supplied by the brethren who came down from Macedonia. So I refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue that way. (vv. 5-9)

As sure as the truth of Christ is in me, this boast of mine shall not be silenced in the land of Greece. Why? Does it mean that I do not love you? Elohim knows that I do. (vv. 10-11)

The Warning Against False Teachers

I shall continue to do what I am doing, so that I may not give any chance (opening, prospect) to those who are looking for opportunity (occasion, chance break) to make claim in their boasting that they work on the same terms (relations, positions, standings) as we do. They are false (bogus, sham, insincere, misleading) apostles, deceitful (untrustworthy, faithless, lying) workmen, in disguise (camouflage) passing (superficial, circulating, overstepping) as Christ’s Apostles! And no wonder, for ***Lucifer himself comes along disguised as an angel of light! So, it is not remarkable that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. But their end will correspond with their works. (vv. 12-15)

Paul’s Enforced Boasting

I repeat, let no one think I am vain. But if you do, then look upon me as a fool, and let me also boast a little. What I am now saying, I say not by order of the Lord; I am speaking as a fool, boastful and confident. And since men generally boast of their personal affairs, I, too, will do the same. Since you are so wise, you enjoy being tolerant of fools. You submit to it when they make slaves of you, when they prey upon you and rob you, when they exalt themselves and slap you in the face. To my shame, I admit that we are that weak. I am going to speak foolishly now. I, too, will dare to boast of anything about which anyone dares to boast. (vv. 16-21)

Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. Are they servants of Christ? I am too, and more so – now I am talking like a madman (enthusiast, extremist). I have more work than anyone else, have been oftener in prison, have been beaten times without number, have often faced death. Five times the orthodox Jews gave me a whipping of forty-lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods, and once I was stoned. I have been shipwrecked three times, and I have spent a night and a day in the watery deep. On my frequent journeys I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from robbers, in danger from my own people, and in danger from the Gentiles. I have faced perils in the city, the desert, at sea, and among false brethren. I have experienced hard work and weariness, many a sleepless night, hunger and thirst; have often been without meals, exposed to cold, and poorly clad. (vv. 22-27)

And in addition to such external things, the anxiety for all the Churches has rested on me. If anyone is weak, have I not sympathized with his weakness? Who has been upset without my burning desire to help him? And if it is right for me to boast, I should like to boast of things that show my own weakness! Elohim, the Father of our Lord Yeshua Ha’Mashiach – He Who is blessed for ever and ever – knows that I am not lying. This happened in Damascus. Under ****King Aretas, the governor guarded the city, wishing to capture me. But I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his clutches.” (vv. 28-33)

*Elohim (from the Hebrew word, Elohim/el-o-heem & the Greek word, Theos/theh-os) = the Supreme God. Exceedingly great and mighty.

**Christ (from the Hebrew word, Ha’Mashiach ישוע המשיח & the Greek word, Christos/khris-tos) = The Anointed, Yeshua the Messiah, in both languages.

***Lucifer: The Septuagint rendersהֵילֵל in Greek as Ἑωσφόρος (heōsphoros), "bringer of dawn" – the ancient Greek name for the morning star; The Septuagint, as the translation of the Hebrew Bible, was a landmark of antiquity. It is the first translation in the history of the Bible. It became the central literary work of Hellenistic Judaism (Greek speaking/living Jews) and Early Christianity.

Similarly, the Vulgate renders הֵילֵל in Latin as Lucifer, the name in that language for the morning star.

Lucifer was created a beautiful angel, who defied God and fell from grace. Isaiah declared, “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!” (Isaiah 14.12) Ezekiel goes into more detail in Ezekiel 28:12-19.

****King Aretas, aka Aretas IV Philopatris (as inscribed in Nabataean Aramaic: Ḥārīṯat Rāḥem-ʿammeh) was the King of the Nabataeans of the east bank of the Jordan River and the Sinai Peninsula, from roughly 9 BC to AD 40.

GOALS

First thing I did when my feet hit the floor this morning, was to get the laptop up-and-running with weight-lifting arm exercises – I do them with reasonable thinking in mind: I’m 65 – I’ll never look like the models in the vids … and my arms won’t look like 20-y.o.-arms (muscle mass disappears as one ages) but, I will have nicely shaped arms; and I’ll be able to wear sleeveless tops for a few more years without embarrassment – that is my goal.

First thing, this morning ... with light weights.
5 Minute Arm Workout – get lean, tones arms:

Today is Laundry Day – but I set that aside for the morning, and tied my hiking boots on 😉; it wasn’t raining, and I needed the early morning walk. I chose the Pacific Way Trail dike hike at 48th & Pacific Way; it’s fairly close to home, and I like walking that gravel dike road. It’s not as busy as the trail head at 38th.

Second thing, this morning.

I saw Yellow Flags Water Iris’s blooming – but no frisking otter. I’ve only seen the otter once, five years ago, when Bob and I walked this dike trail with our little grandson. I hope, every time I walk this walk, that I’ll see it again: time will tell.

I also saw the yellow pond lilies were profusely blooming.

Yellow Flag Iris's add color to the landscape.
Dike Hike.
Favorable weather; blue skies on the horizon ...

And baby ducks were scuttle-butting everywhere 😊

Most Mallard papas were flanking their hens, and watching their darting progeny jet through the water … but I caught sight of one tired papa catching some shut-eye.

Sleeping Mallard.

Watching those fast-foot churning-darting ducklings, I took mercy on him and scooted past him quietly – he’d need the energy gained with the nap, later on; they sure were keeping their mamas busy 😉

In the air, sparrows and song birds darted here and there … and 3 mallards flew around me as they took to the air – for a minute I thought they might fly right into me – but they swerved around me and noisily flew off. I watched a larger bird, higher in the sky, but couldn’t tell whether it was an eagle or a buzzard.

Interesting cloud formation.
High-flying bird; could be a buzzard.

And a white flowering tree, flanked by green-leafed trees, kinda-sorta resembled a white waterfall.

I know: I have an overactive imagination 😉

White floral waterfall ...

On the return loop of the walk, I stopped and spent some time watching the little feathered darlings – one little fella was cute as he leaped out of the water to nip at bugs on the wing.

And mama and papa were doting in their goal to get their brood from egg to adulthood; so far, the egg hatching has been a success 😊

Baby ducks taking their parents for a swim. LOL
Stevie Ray Vaughan – ‘Scuttle Buttin’ song:
Papa Mallard hung back for a bit - then joined his Hen & 5 ct. brood.

A little closer to the parked Highlander, I came across a nesting site; and watched those ducklings for a few minutes, too. The ducklings don’t stay little very long, and they are so darn cute!

Spotted a nesting site.
Only 3 ducklings for this pair.
7 ct. rambunctious ducklings for this Hen.

It wasn’t noon yet when I got back home, so I delayed the laundry again as I pruned back a few low branches on the decorative Maple out front, that were overhanging into the street … and I planted a hanging pot with the flowering plants I’d bought at the Adna Floral Sale, last month. The fuchsia was starting to bloom, so I figured I’d better get it in an outside pot – the fuchsia is a perennial, and I usually do not have much luck with them; but I’ll be staying home more this year, so hopefully the fuchsia will live and thrive: and I’ll be able to successfully over-winter it.

That is the goal, anyway.

Orange-Yellow flowering Parrot Beak trailing fern, White & Pink Fuchsia, & a Purple Petunia.

After the pot was planted, watered, and hung: I called a friend, and scheduled a lunch date in town next Thursday, at the Vietnamese Restaurant on Commerce.

Then, I got my two delayed loads of laundry underway 😉

I did my physical exercises.

And worked a bit more on the boy themed baby blanket I am designing.

I would have had it done tonight ... but halfway through, I noticed it was not wide enough; and had to tear it all out and restart :-(

But the pattern is easy, so the progress is quick. The goal is to have it totally completed tomorrow.

MOD Peekaboo Blue Baby Blanket; Boy – crochet.

It was an enjoyable morning.

It’s been a busy/productive day.

I’ll sleep well tonight – 99% of the day's goals were met 😊

HAPPY SURPRISES

Last night, I designed, worked on … and finished a full-size baby blanket for the local Caring Pregnancy Center; I started the blanket while whipping up some recipes for my Cookathon meals (all three meals, took an hour or more to cook) – and I finished the last st on the edging around 1:30 A.M. while watching an old black-n-white movie on Youtube.

MOD V-Stitch Baby Blanket FINISHED ~Full Receiving Size.

I slept in ‘til 9:30 A.M. this morning, so skipped I Fellowship. While stepping out of the shower and shaking my towel out – I hawked up a loogie onto the edge of my towel. In a moment of frustration while cleaning the towel so I could still use it, it came to mind that I hadn’t used my asthma inhaler since last Sunday – I hadn’t even given my inhaler a thought until that surprising loogie brought me up short with that surprising thought. Hallelujah and Praise the Lord! The gunk was being cleared out of my lungs without using my inhaler. I was at Fellowship last Sunday, and specifically asked for prayer for that; the inhaler is helpful, but it is not good for my body. I really want a touch from the Lord, so I never have to use it again. Since 2022 was ushered in by Father Time, I’ve had to use my inhaler at least once a day; so, not having to use it at all for a full week is truly a gracious blessing from Elohim.

Thank You, Yeshua 😊

Eating breakfast and cruising the Blog Hops, I got another nice surprise: Sara, at Creative Jewish Mom highlighted my knit fingertip towels 😊

Everyone here, enjoys using them … and they look nice in a woven basket 😉

MOD Fingertip Towels highlighted on the 'Creative Jewish Mom' Blog Hop
MOD Fingertip Towels in the spare bath at home.

I just got back from Supper with friends; and tonight, I’ll design/work on a baby blanket for a boy; I don’t think I’ll be up ‘til the wee hours of the morning like I was this morning, but I’ll have a good head start on the project 😉

Doing these baby items gives me pleasure in knowing that life continues despite death’s hovering overshadow; and the demonrats manic push for infanticide – and working on/putting finishing touches on my own designs, fleshes out my in-house-rainy-days: I never do the same thing twice; everything I design and work up, is a 1-of-a-kind item. Aside from repetitive driving of scenic routes I enjoy … repetition of artistic inspiration bores me.

But death does happen, hence the small box of 15-inch Angel Baby Blankets I designed and crafted for grieving parents who lost their babies to miscarriage or sudden infant death syndrome: no two are alike … just like the tiny infants.

This box will be mailed off next time I am downtown.
