ROUNDABOUT Day

The day started out so predictable: drive to Lexington for my Friday morning coffee/chit-chat hour (which has a way of morphing into 2 hours ๐Ÿ˜‰). These are people that know me (from teen years, forward) – these are people that knew Bob (the majority of his life); these are people that understand what I am talking about when I mention a place, a time in a particular era, a specific name: we have history together. It is a pleasant way to spend a Friday morning.

The 3-hour roundabout started as I was turning into Heron Pointe – I saw a Garage Sale Sign at the entrance of the Park drive … and naturally had to go check it out.

It was the 1st sale of the year: I was drawn like a moth to the flame.

1st Garage Sale of 2022; and it was close to home.

I should have backed out before I even got all the way through the carport: I could smell the air freshener at the curb – it was that strong. The odor reminded me of those cheap pine tree shaped car fresheners sold at gas stations. Walking into that garage sale stole my breath. Literally. But, like the moth drawn to the flame, I was pulled in. I spent about half an hour pawing through the stuff, trying not to breathe too deeply/too much … and walked away with $5 worth of goodies: eight paperback books, candles – three different types (I only burn the tea light candles, but the tapers are pretty to look at in the candlesticks ๐Ÿ˜‰), a trivet, sheer contact paper that I use to ‘shield’ my paper membership cards (which I did as soon as I got home), a wooden plaque that so fits my laidback hausfrau attitude, and a few crafty odds-n-ends I can use to trim the crochet book covers I make (it should have cost more, but it was after 1 PM, and the sellers didn’t feel like haggling). I washed e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. with a light solution of bleach and water to get rid of that lingering/cloying air freshener scent – I read in bed, I don’t want to have an asthma attack while enjoying a good read.

Then I changed my shoes, and went for a walk at Willow Grove Park.

The weather was perfect for a walk … and I needed to breathe some fresh air into my burning lungs.

Already planning ahead. LOL
The Covered Picnic Areas look nice; Mt. St. Helen's in the background.

I talked with people I met on the trail.

I enjoyed the sunshine.

I petted a friendly dog.

I paused briefly as I was rounding the upper end of the looping trail – the toe of my hiking boot almost stepped on a heart shaped leaf; the heart-shaped leaf spoke perfectly to me, without actually having an audible voice.

And I did not cry at the sight of it; or at the message it spoke to my heart.

Pretty explanatory ...

There’s still a hole in my heart. There are many reasons a hole exists in my heart; the loss of the love of my life, just enlarged it: no one else can see it – strangers crossing paths with me are not aware of it; but I feel it, I know it’s there. But the raw edges have been cauterized by time/unfolding life over the 3 years, 2 months, and 4 days that I have been walking through this life on Earth, alone.

cau·ter·ize /หˆkรดdษ™หŒrฤซz/verb

past tense: cauterized; past participle: cauterized; burn the skin or flesh of (a wound) with a heated instrument or caustic substance, typically to stop bleeding or prevent the wound from becoming infected.

I am learning to be happy again. I didn’t know that would be possible, but it is.

All of my old life was consumed with my love for Bob, and the add-ons of kids and grandkids throughout our 44 years as a family; when all that ended with Bob’s last breath this side of Heaven, I was rootless. Purposeless. I felt my life, though actually still a good life, was for all intents and purposes, pointless.

But Elohei is a faithful, loving, gentle, and generous God ๐Ÿ˜Š

He never left me. His comforting presence carried me through those first heart-rending 6 months of widowhood. Then, in His compassion towards me, He sent people into my life that cemented friendships (renewed old friendships, and flourishing new friendships) with me; and taught me how to breathe again without choking on air … and how to find happiness in a bleak and inimical world. They had all experienced loss of one kind or another – they were wise counselors, and gentle/patient coaches in this new game of life I have become an active participant in.

I will always be grateful.

As I rounded the upper end of the trail and headed into the back roundabout to the car, I noticed that there have been improvements, and new additions to the Park’s layout. Completed covered picnic areas dot the landscape. Restrooms have been updated. There are additional playthings in the kiddie playground area. Brand new benches have been placed along the trail route.

Everytime I’ve come walking here, something new is obvious.

I noticed new benches placed along the hiking trail, as I made the return loop back to the Highlander.
2nd leg of Loop route from Boat Launch area.

Willow grove Park is not a large Park – it is not wide, and it is not long: I can watch traffic on Ocean Beach Highway, with the naked eye, across the width of Willow Grove community (which includes the Park); and you can look down the length of it, to Stella, which lies further upriver along another portion of Ocean Beach Highway – and watch traffic there too, with the naked eye. Ocean Beach Highway is a very busy stretch of roadway – cars are very visible from the walking trail.

Willow Grove community is not that wide across; Park view.
Ocean Beach traffic - zoomed in; someone walking behind me is pretty excited about the Park’s new lawn mower. LOL.
Entire Willow Grove area - Park & community, which is basically farmland.
Willow Grove Park & community outline.

Willow Grove appears to be roughly the same size as Puget Island – the main island, not all the surrounding areas combined that are included in the ‘island’ concept. Puget Island is 3 miles wide, and 7 miles long.

Puget Island appears to be roughly the same dimensions as Willow Grove ...
Willow Grove Main Road is just beyond those boulders in the forefront, past the upturned root ball.
The Upper End of Willow Grove Trail is directly across from Stella, along Ocean Beach Highway; far distance.
Stella-WA; Willow Grove is straight across the Coal Creek Slough - Columbia River is the large body of water.
Zoomed in traffic on Ocean Beach Highway - passing through Stella; can easily be seen with naked eye.

Walking through the small stand of alder trees flanking the trail, the pungent scent of unfurling new-growth-leaves, I’m mentally transported back to my childhood years in Minnesota – and the scent of the birch trees that surrounded my childhood home there. Alders are not birch trees … but there are similarities: white bark, and the pungent, similar, scent of the leaves. The difference is the shape of the leaves, and the skin of the bark (the bark is what attracts me): birch trees have a bark that peels away in fine layers, like curling paper; and sappy, fleshy, pink under-skin when the bark is peeled (and I peeled many birch logs as a girl in Minnesota). When the bark of alter trees start peeling, the peeling bark is hard ad coarse – and that means the tree is dying.

Alders and birches are both in the birch family (Betulaceae). You might say they're cousins -- different genera, with alders in the genus Alnus and birches in Betula. They're enough alike to be confusing, especially when they don't have leaves.

The sky was as busy as the beachfront, today ๐Ÿ˜Š

Jet shows up very well in the cloudless sky ...
I wonder who is going where ...
Treasure Hunters - so far, no luck.

Treasure hunters beeping the sand of Willow Grove; steady beeping - zero collection; I stopped in passing, and asked if they'd found anything ;-)
Another jet directly over the Highlander.

It was enjoyable riverwalk day; a 45-minute walk was stretched into an hour walk by the pic-snapping stops, and chit-chat-noshing along the way ๐Ÿ˜‰

Leaving the Park, the car notified me that the “maintenance required soon” had been upped to “maintenance needs attention now” status … so, I drove to Dick Hanna’s Toyota in Kelso: the Highlander is scheduled for next Tuesday afternoon.

And the return trip back home is where the day’s final roundabout kicked in.

Allen Street Bridge to Kelso & Cowlitz Way Bridge from Kelso.

I was not about to deal with frenzy of rush hour traffic againone trip wading trough it was enough; I did a zigzag route back home via Clark Street to Pacific Way … all backroads waaaay up in the hill heights, off the main Ocean Beach ‘downtown’ drag.

round·a·bout/หˆroundษ™หŒbout/adjective

Not following a short direct route; circuitous.

"we need to take a roundabout route to avoid rush hour traffic."

Clark Street, Longview from Cowlitz Way Bridge, Kelso; 3 min.
Pacific Way from Clark Street; 9 min (3.9 mi) via Cascade Way.
Heron Pointe from Pacific Way; 6 min (3.1 mi) via Pacific Way.

Later, I relaxed with a small goblet of Shabbat wine after Supper – I deserved it after the rush hour madness to Kelso; Elohim commands/sanctions it as a holy rite – and Yeshua exampled the drinking of wine on holy occasions. The observance of Shabbat as a Holy Day Of Rest is encouraged for Jews, and for Christians: the two are interlinked; there cannot be one without the other (I happen to be both, physically as well as spiritually). Wine is encouraged/enjoyed for happy occasionshappiness is the key word for today ๐Ÿ˜Š

Shabbat Eve.

CRISSCROSS

 Today was a crisscross day.

Crisscross: to mark with intersecting lines; to pass back and forth/through or over; overlap, intersect.

All day long.

It started when my feet touched the floor this morning.

Spam calls were crisscrossing the airwaves like sparring swordsmen … and subsequently being sent to voicemail; where I promptly deleted them without giving them ear time.

While washing my hair, I thought I’d better drive to castle Rock and grab a week’s worth of the salads I like (and that Longview does not sell); I also decided to call the hair salon I like in Castle Rock, and make a hair appointment for next week sometime; before available openings were filled – so, after toweling my hair, and briefly aiming the blow dryer at it – I made the call: the hair salon wasn’t open yet. As I was dressing, the cell jingled; the salon owner was returning my call … and three times the call was ended when airwaves crisscrossed and broke communication connection: both of us were on cellphones, so I guess we were both walking around at the same time hoping for a connect signal that would last more than a few seconds: finally, a solid connect was established, and she said she could book me for 10 AM this morning. I threw a quick glance at the clock (and did a fast mental time calculation), and told her I’d be driving in from Longview: she said she’d hold the opening for me. I hastily pulled the rest of my clothing on, grabbed my wallet, and beat feet.

My hair needed attention.

I do like the Shag haircut, but I don’t like looking shaggy when it’s lost its shape – my shagged hair needed to be reshaped.

The morning was foggy; fog lights were engaged with the speed control app as I drove up and over Delameter Road, and I was only 5 minutes late ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hearing, “That cut really looks good on you” was worth the hustle to crisscross the foggy landscape ๐Ÿ˜‰

After I left the Hair Salon, I drove 2 seconds to the Grocery, and bought the six salads I had originally slated my morning for.

Coming back home was not as easy as getting to Castle Rock had been, even with the foggy overcast.

There were road crews everywhere along the route homeward.

Hazel Dell Road from Castle Rock; 9 mins. via snippets of West Side Highway & Delameter Rd.
Road Crew 1; Hazel Dell Road.
Road Crew 2; Hazel Dell Road.
Virginia Way from Hazel Dell Road; 14 mins. short touchdown on West Side Highway.
Road Crew 3; Glenwood Drive & Virginia Way junction.
Glenwood Drive & Virginia Way Junction; Longview. Red Marker is where road crew was today ...

Traffic delays weren’t too lengthy, thank God ๐Ÿ˜Š

Carefully slipping past the crews and flags-women and driving down Glenwood towards Pacific Way, I debated backtracking to walk the PW Trail after refrigerating the salads … or skipping it, and cleaning house instead.

I hadn’t planned on the haircut this morning – I had planned a morning walk before grabbing the salads. It was already 1 PM.

Glenwood Drive & Pacific Way; Longview-WA

Unbagging the salads at home, and slipping them into the ‘fridge, I made up my mind to backtrack; my daily walks are as important as my daily salads. I need to stick to routine if I expect success.

And I do expect success – that is what I am aiming; and working for.

Plus … I just plain enjoy walking every day and taking in nature’s delights.

My weekly salads I ferry home from Castle Rock; not available in Longview.
Pacific Way from Heron Pointe - 6 mins; via Ocean Beach Highway, Coal Creek Rd, and Pacific Way to 42nd Avenue Trailhead.
Pacific Way Trail; lower end.

I wore lighter shoes today … and walked brisker than I have been walking.

I saw the water fowl {regulars}, and one unidentifiable duck.

Ring-neck Duck pair.
Goldeneye duck.

I watched the huge heron take wing, coast past me as I stood on the dike trail, and fly to a new perch – just to my right ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mallards & flying Great Blue Heron.

I watched with concern as a murky patch of water flowed downstream towards the nest sites

Scummy water fouling up the dike waters; it is draining from somewhere up-bank.

I listened to songbirds, frogs, toads, and overhead jets: all these sounds crisscrossed the airwaves swirling around me, and created a strange – yet soothing – freestyle symphony.

Busy airways, today.

I watched a fat muskrat lunching on water plant foliage.

Muskrat enjoying a lunch break; bank burrow opening in background.

I noticed sunny blossoms blanket the opposite bank (they were not there 5 days ago); and snapped off a blurry zoomed in pic, which I still cannot identify.

Sunny Spring color popping ...
Don't know what this flower is, but it sure is bright yellow.

I felt the walk’s burn working its magic on my body.

It was a pleasant 46-degrees (warmed significantly by my brisk walking), even with the low, hovering, gray clouds.

I noticed crisscrossing jet stream lines in the sky; and couldn’t help thinking that with all the demonrat waspish clamoring about “climate change!”, not a single word has been said about curbing jet stream pollution (or electric jets instead of fuel propelled jets): quite possibly because politicians and celebrities cannot pedal a bike to DC from all corner of the world … and their wives/brats from all corners of the world, can’t pedal a bike from their fancy-schmancy homes to far-flung posh holiday locations, or far-flung fancy private school locations. It is only the little people deplorables that must be kept hamstrung and tethered to the unrealistic and tyrannical demonrat climate change agenda demands (like no more fuel propelled cars after 2030).

Watching the crisscrossing jet activities high in the sky above me, I wondered if that annoying, obnoxious brat greta thunberg realizes the hypocrisy of her shrill preaching “climate change now!” while jetting around the world to push forward her aimless activist activities as she enjoys her first-class jetting experiences …

Criss-crossing, jetting jets, are slicing up the atmosphere. I've noticed that there are no public outcries to end air traffic ... ONLY road traffic.

But, I didn’t want to be angry at ridiculous and worthless politicians/celebrities while enjoying my walk.

Tagging the dike gate at the one-mile end of the two-mile graveled loop trail, I pivoted and caught sight of Longview’s Mill Town mascot: a gigantic testimony of the scant prosperity still left in Longview.

NORPAC (North Pacific Paper Corporation) is the worst polluter – the sky-reaching plume never stops.

The sight of that plume, reaching into the sky, struck me as eerie today.

The pollution plume from the Plant on Industrial Way eerily resembles a small atomic explosion. Kinda freaky - and the reason I have 'environmental asthma' since moving to Longview-WA.

Today’s various crisscrossing were certainly in action throughout the day.

I listened to Joel’s album all day long – it is very uplifting. I've been listening to Joel's music since 1979, and Bob liked it too - our kids and grandkids were raised listening to him, too, as long as they were under our roof and in our vehicles. Bob took me to see him in concert at Rehoboth Messianic Fellowship, nine years ago. Joel and Bob talked for about 45 minutes; nothing in particular, just noshing ๐Ÿ˜Š

Joel is very personable. Like Bob.
