TURNIP DESTRUCTION

My turnips had plumped out to the desired size for harvesting, so I pulled a few this afternoon – NOT happy with the harvest :-(

EVERY one of them pulled had severe root damage! The leaves, though, were perfectly green and healthy, though the leaves did wilt in the hot sun and some were a bit chomped on here and there; but nothing that would indicate a serious pest problem.

This is my first garden here at our new locale and I was hoping with new beds and brand new soil, I’d get a fairly decent harvest. I am not sure what the heck went wrong, but it looks like my beets are bolting, my rutabagas are a wash … just not thriving in any sense whatsoever … and the turnips have been destroyed. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I am pretty sure the wildly fluctuating weather has a lot to do with the issues. Close to the river like we are, the temperatures on ANY GIVEN DAY can go as high as 100 degrees and in a heartbeat sink to about 40 with thick low-shrouding fog. And it is HUMID no matter where the temperature is – today it was a breezy 80 degrees with 57% humidity. However – after cleaning them up, slicing off the damaged pieces, and dicing the peeled portions, I was surprisingly blessed with 2-3/4 cups of turnip pieces I can use in Fall/Winter Soups and stews: I didn’t think I’d even get a full cup of pieces.

I am assuming that the problem is wireworm because there were no maggots on the roots or soil when I pulled them as there would be with cabbage maggot infestation. I am THANKFUL for that small grace! I grow everything for our food table organically – I do not even use ‘safe organic’ pesticides.

Common in home gardens across North America, wireworms (up to 1-1/2 inch long) are tough slender worms with shiny skin and three pairs of legs just behind their head. They are yellow to brownish-red in color and feed entirely underground, attacking germinating seeds, roots, bulbs and tubers. Damaged plants soon wilt and die. If infestations are heavy, thin and patchy crops may appear in the garden and reseeding will most likely be necessary.

Wireworms are the larval stage of click beetles. Approximately 1/2 inch long, these brown to black colored, bullet-shaped beetles are notable for their ability to click and right themselves when placed on their backs.

Doing further research, I read that wireworm larvae and adults overwinter in the soil. In early spring female beetles emerge from the soil, mate and lay eggs underground. Hatching takes place in 2-4 weeks, and the young larvae begin working their way through the soil in search of food. Larvae feed underground for 2-6 years with most of their damage occurring in early spring when soil temperatures are cool. Pupation occurs in late summer and adult beetles emerge in the spring. One generation per year, the life-cycle requiring 1-6 years to complete.

SIX YEARS of continual damage in my veggie beds is what I understand from what I just read!!

Lord help me …

So since I do not use pesticides – of any type – I am just going to have to be exceedingly diligent in keeping things under control in my soil. I’ll have to start beefing the health up in it, and then diligently keeping tabs on pests. I’m going to have Hubs build me a couple more birdhouses to hang in the beds area (birds consume a large amount of larvae and beetles) …

… and then use my Claw tool to thoroughly turn the soil to keep the prolific beetles so frustrated they leave my garden beds and crawl off somewhere else; as well as expose all stages of the problem to the weather and lurking birds.:

I already practice crop rotation (and religiously keep detailed notations from year to year); I also practice companion planting.

I will use a “potato trap” though, meaning I cut a spud in half and run a stick through the middle - burying the spud about 1” deep, using the protruding end of the stick as a handle. Hopefully when I check the “trap” in a day or 2 … it will have lured and trapped wireworms which will then be smashed and trashed.

And I am going to invest in some sticky traps and set those out too to catch the pests on wing!

((((YES!!!!))) I am engaging in full out W.A.R. with these pests >;-(

Sorry, but I have absolutely N.O.S.Y.M.P.A.T.H.I.E.S. whatsoever for destructive critters. When they bailiwick on my turf and create havoc in my veggie beds they deserve what they get.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ACTS ~ Chapters 10 & 11

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO Acts ~ Chapter 10:

There was a man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, who was a captain in an Italian company of the Roman army. Both he and his family were pious and God-fearing. He was also generous to the poor, and prayed constantly. One day at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon, he had a vision. He clearly saw an angel of Elohei coming to him, and heard him say, “Cornelius.” He stared at him, and said, as he was becoming fearful, ‘What is it Adonai?’ He answered, “Your prayers and your charities have gone up to Elohei as a memorial. Now send some men to Joppa and ask Simon, called Peter, to come here. He is living with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the seashore. He will tell you what you ought to know.”

When the angel who had spoken to him had left, Cornelius called in 2 of his servants and a pious soldier who waited on him at all times. After telling them what had taken place, he sent them on to Joppa.

The next day they set out on their journey and about noon they were coming near to the town. Just then Peter went up on the housetop to pray. He became very hungry and craved something to eat. But while they were making dinner ready, he fell into a vision. He saw the heavens opening and a vessel coming down to him, more like a big tablecloth let down to the earth by its 4 corners. On this cloth were placed all the 4-footed creatures of the earth, including wild beasts and creeping things and birds of the air. A voice came to him saying, “Rise Peter; kill and eat.” ‘Not at all, Adonai,’ said Peter, ‘for I have never eaten anything prohibited or unclean.’ The voice came a 2nd time to him, “What Elohei has cleansed you must not consider unclean.’ This was repeated 3 times – after which, the vessel was taken back into heaven.

As he was thinking about the meaning of the vision, the men whom Cornelius had sent came. They had first inquired as to Simon’s house, and now they were standing by the porch. They called out to ask if Simon Peter were lodging there. Peter was still meditating about the vision when The Ruach said to him, “See 3 men are looking for you. Get up and go down to them, It is I Who sent them, so do not have any misgivings.” Peter then went down to the men who had been sent to him by Cornelius and said, “I am the one that you are looking for. What is your errand?” They said, ‘We come from Cornelius. He is a captain and an upright and God-fearing man, to which the whole Jewish nation can testify. He was instructed by a holy angel to send for you, to ask you to come to his house so he may hear what you have to say.’

Peter then called them in and gave them lodging for the night. The next day he went back with them and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. And the day after that they arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and meanwhile had gathered his relatives and intimate friends at his house. When Peter came in, Cornelius met him, then fell at his feet to worship him. But Peter raised him up, saying, “Get up. I am just a man like yourself.” With these words he went into the house, where he found a great many gathered.

He said to them, “You know, of course, that it is against the law for a Jew to associate with one of another race, or even to visit them. But Elohei has shown me that no man is vulgar or unclean. For that reason I came without any hesitation when you sent for me. But I want to ask why you sent for me.” Cornelius answered, ‘4 days ago at this time, 3 o’clock in the afternoon, I was at prayer here at home when all at once I saw a man standing before me in bright apparel. He said to me, “Cornelius, Elohei has heard your prayers and has remembered your gifts to charity. You must send to Joppa and ask Simon, who is also called Peter, to come here. He is staying at the home of Simon the tanner, by the seaside.” So I sent for you at once and you did well incoming. And here we are now, in Elohei’s presence, ready to hear whatever Elohim has told you to say.’

Then Peter spoke: “Truly Elohim is not a respecter of persons. That I can see. He is pleased with any man in any land who fears Him and does what is right. Now he has sent His Word to the sons of Israel, in which He announces the glad tidings of peace through Yeshua Ha’Mashiach, Who is Lord of all. You know the story of what has happened throughout all of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached. You know how Elohim anointed Yeshua of Nazareth with The Ruach and with power and how He went about doing good and healing everyone who was oppressed by Lucifer, because Elohim was with Him. We are witnesses of all that he did in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And they put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross. But Elohim raised Him up on the 3rd Day and permitted Him to be clearly seen. Not everyone saw Him, but we saw Him, having been chosen His witnesses beforehand, and we ate and drank with Him after He had been raised from the dead. And He gave us the commission to preach to the people, to testify fully that He is the One Whom Elohim has appointed to be Judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify to this, that everyone that believes in Him will have his sins forgiven through His Name.”

Even while Peter was preaching this sermon, The Ruach came upon all who were listening to his message. The Jewish Believers who came along with Peter were astounded at the fact that the gift of The Ruach had been poured out upon the non-Jews also. For they heard them talking in other tongues and praising Elohei. Peter then said, “Can anyone refuse these people baptism with water, seeing that they have received The Ruach just as we have?” He then gave orders that they should be baptized in the Name of Adonai Yeshua. This done, they begged him to stay there a while longer.

~CHAPTER 11:

The apostles and brethren who were in Judea learned that non-Jews also had received the Word of Elohei. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem again, those who still held to the need of circumcision criticized him. The said, ‘Why did you visit the uncircumcised and eat with them?’ Peter then began to realize what had happened in consecutive order.

“I was in the town of Joppa, and at prayer,” he said, “when a vision came upon me, in which I saw what seemed like a sort of vessel coming down. It was like a great tablecloth let down from heaven by its 4 corners. It stopped when it reached me. I was watching carefully and thinking, as I noted what was on the sheet – quadrupeds, including the wild beasts, also creeping things and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, “Rise up, Peter, kill and eat.” But I answered, ‘By no means, Adonai, for nothing common or unclean has ever come into my mouth.’ Then the voice from heaven spoke a 2nd time, “What Elohei has made clean you must not call unclean.” This was done 3 times, after which it was all withdrawn into heaven. At this very moment 3 men stopped at the house where I was staying, having been sent to me from Caesarea. The Ruach told me to go with them without hesitation, and I went, accompanied by 6 brethren, and we entered the house of the man. He related to us how he had seen an angel in his own home. The angel had stood before him and had said, “Send some men to Joppa to ask for Simon Peter. He will tell you how you can be saved; yes, you and your whole household.”

“As I began to talk to them, The Ruach came down upon them just a He had on us at the beginning. Then I recalled that Adonai had said, “John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized with The Ruach.” Now, since Elohei gave them the same gift as He had given us for believing in Adonai Yeshua Ha’Mashiach, who was I that I should try to hinder Elohim?” When they heard this statement, they were satisfied and praised Elohei, saying, ‘So Elohei gives life also to the Gentiles through repentance!’

Of those who had fled from the persecution against Stephen, some went up to Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch. They preached the Word – but only to the Jews. There were, however, some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who came to Antioch and spoke with the Greeks there, preaching the Gospel of Yeshua Ha’Mashiach. The hand of Adonai was with them, so that a great number turned to Yeshua in Faith.

This good report came to ears of the assembly at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to follow up at Antioch. When he came there and saw how gracious Elohim had been to them, he rejoiced and exhorted everyone to have a resolute heart and to hold fast to Yeshua. He was a good man, full of The Ruach and Faith. And many people were won over to Yeshua.

The Barnabas went on further to Tarsus to find Saul. When he found him, he brought him back with him to Antioch. For a whole year they labored there in the assembly, teaching large gatherings. It was there in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, got up and, under inspiration of The Ruach, prophesied that a severe famine would come upon the whole inhabited earth, and this came to pass under Emperor Claudius (Claudius was Roman emperor from 41 to 54). So the disciples decided that each one should give according to his prosperity to the relief of the brethren living in Judea. And this they did – sending their contribution in the care of Barabas and Saul to the elders there.

OLD GLORY AMERICANA FINGER PUPPET SET - #3/BETSY ROSS

I actually designed and finished Betsy a week ago – shortly after I finished and posted Abigail Adams (https://jeastofeden.blogspot.com/2018/07/mod-old-glory-americana-finger-puppet.html), but it has been busy here with the gardens and family time, and I just have not had the time to download and post Betsy Ross FP pics:

I like the way these puppets have come together :-D

And I also like the bold and courageous people they represent ;-)

The Wasp Woman | 1959 | Horror, Sci-Fi

I have been outside most of the day today (9 hours straight) – fertilizing veggies and flowers, harvesting my onion beds for the 3rd time (and chopping the pulled onions: 24 today), and then watering the veggie beds.

I feel sunburned; but that’s okay. A lot was accomplished today that will pay off in big dividends ;-)

I used Miracle Grow and a water bucket on the flower beds, but fertilized the edibles – veggies & herbs – with Fish Emulsion mixed and poured into a hand held sprayer; I started doing that years ago and like how the nozzle wand reaches into hard to reach spots and sprays the fertilizer directly into the root zone with no waste whatsoever:

FISH EMULSION FERTILIZER MIX going into hand-held pump
sprayer. I use this to fertilizer deep; straight to the roots.

I took inventory while I fertilized and noted several appreciative things …

The Corn bed is thriving - I saw at least 3 tassels
starting to peek out from under the top corn leaves; and a few leaf bases are starting
to swell with baby cobs.
The stakes behind the corn stalks help keep the corn from being bent so far backwards that it breaks or falls to the ground in the high river winds that tear through here; like earlier today while I was fertilizing them.
Bush Beans are setting blossoms; beans should follow by end
of month.
Chioggia Beets plumping up and nearly ready to harvest.
Rutabagas are plumping up.
Blueberries get harvested every few days; Aza eats half of
them, but I get enough to freeze too ;-)

And in-between the fertilizing and inventory, Hubs pulled down the hummingbird feeders for a cleaning and refill – and had to tread carefully because a wasp was buzzing around one of the feeders and we are all scarily allergic to those winged demons; even so, as soon as I saw that wasp and stayed back until it flew off, I was reminded of this old Sci-fi movie posted above. LOL!

Hubs and I swell up when stung, but I have a more severe reaction that includes swelling of throat/tongue, buzzing in the ears, and an accelerated heartbeat. But I am NOT going to stop gardening or hanging hummingbird feeders, so we (including the bees and wasps) are just going to have to have to come to an agreeable conclusion with ME as alpha queen bee since I am ultimately the one who decides is they live or die ...

After the fertilizing was done and the onions harvested, I sat outside under the carport and prepared huge bowls of various cuts of onion that were measured and frozen for future Winter meals …

Third harvest of Candy Onions - 64 onions so far frozen in
various cuts. 32 left to harvest.

The castoff onion leaves were used for mulch in the veggie beds – I use EVERYTHING safely useful & beneficial to soil building for mulch ;-)

Chopped onion leaves used as mulch between veggies. This is
the Celery, Swiss Chard & Carrot bed.
Chopped onion leaves were also used to mulch the remaining
onions bed ...
And chopped onion leaves were also laid as mulch at the
base of the Roma Tomatoes - which are coming on strong :-D

… and ruined my feet by continuing to wear my thongs on them in this hot/sticky weather instead of changing into tennis shoes to do all this activity - and NO! I DID NOT wear underwear on my feet; I am referring to flip-flop footwear when I talk of thongs :-D :-D :-D

MOD OLD GLORY AMERICANA FINGER PUPPET SET – #2/Abigail Adams

Yesterday I posted the 1st finger puppet – John Adams – I designed and crafted for MOD ‘Old Glory Americana’ themed finger puppets (https://jeastofeden.blogspot.com/2018/07/old-glory-americana-finger-puppet-set.html); Abigail Adams is John’s wife and she is the 2nd of this set to be completed. I worked steadily on Abigail last night from 8 p.m until around 1:30 a.m. this morning:

Abigail Adams FP FINISHED.

The more I look into the background of the American Revolutionary War and those involved in it, the more I appreciate their personal sacrifices and futuristic outlook. Hope is a revolutionary concept; and hope is sadly lacking in America among Americans today :-(

As I mentioned yesterday, these finger puppets could be a fun way to spice up the American History studies for the small fry ;-)

Abigail Adams back view.
White mop cap ‘bonnet’, Brown Hair, & Skipper Blue dress w- White trims.
White gathered mop cap, neck lace & frilly dress sleeves.
White trimmed bodice highlighted with Skipper Blue lacing.

I am basically designing and crafting this set for my 2018 Bazaar Cache, but will make a set for anyone interested and messages me. The entire set will be priced at $25, which is a fair price for them … and far below value for my materials and hours put in – to date I have 10-1/2 Hours invested (of which I take 1 or 2 quick ‘pit stop exits’ to the bathroom when needed. I am only asking ONE HOUR COST at minimum wage for the entire set); and while using scraps to make the finger puppets, I will need to purchase 3 skeins of yarn (@ $3.85 EA) to make the carry/storage pouch to put them into. As I stated in the yesterday’s post, I ask $5 a piece for my finger puppets, but as you can calculate by what I just posted … ALL the other finger puppets in this set will - for all intents and purposes - be FREE; as well as the hours I put in last night; and will put in until the set is completed and tagged. And my finger puppets are designed to hold up under active and prolonged use: unlike those made in asia or south america that can be purchased in children’s clothing stores and fall apart practically before the cashier has closed the cashier’s drawer.

MOD OLD GLORY AMERICANA FINGER PUPPET SET – # 1/John Adams

This idea actually came to me 7 years ago

MOD Original Draft Drawings

… but I have only recently found free time to get to it; and to be honestly truthful, when the obama coup took place there seemed to be no point. Now, however, that there is REAL PRESIDENT in The White House and Oval Office that truly has America and Americans’ best interests at the forefront of his administrative agendas, it seems the appropriate time to get to work designing/crafting them ;-)

This finger puppet set would be a good background prop for a home educating History teaching session, as well as a good addition to my 2018 Bazaar Cache :-D

I started work on John Adams around 9 p.m. last night and finished him up at 2:30 a.m. this morning – 5-1/2 hours straight work went into his creation. I ask $5 for each of my 1-of-1-kind-finger puppets … and get it ;-)

John Adams FP FINISHED. Black Tricorn, Black Hair, Brown Vest, & Ivory Frilled Shirt.

And I enjoyed every second of it!

BBQ COUNTRY RIBS, SIMPLE AND EASY

This recipe is quick and simple – guaranteed to keep you out of the hot kitchen until serving time ;-)

I generally buy a bag of lemons and juice them – pouring the juice into plastic ice cube trays and freezing them for recipes that call for tablespoons of lemon juice (each cube of each tray will equal 1 TBSP).

1 pound Country Style Ribs * 1 TBSP dry Onion (or ¼ cup fresh, diced) * ½ cup Water * 2 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar * 1 TBSP Worcestershire Sauce * ¼ cup Lemon Juice * 2 TBSP Brown Sugar * 1 cup Chili Sauce * ½ teaspoon Salt * ¼ teaspoon Paprika * ¼ teaspoon black Pepper * 1 teaspoon dry Mustard

Put the onion, lemon juice and half the sauce in the bottom of your crockpot:

Keep some sauce off to the side to pour over ribs ...

Remove the ribs from their wrapper and add to the sauce in the crockpot, pushing them into the sauce to make sure the sauce us coating the meat pretty well; then pour the remaining sauce over the ribs so the meat is covered thoroughly:

Cover and cook on LOW for 6 hours - or until meat is done.

That’s it :-D

Simple and easy peasy ;-)
