OH MAN!
Bob turned me onto Clive's books about a decade ago ... a guy at work gave him a book to read, and it came home in Bob's lunch pail. When I opened it up the next morning, the book looked interesting; so I asked Bob if I could read it after he was finished.
I WAS HOOKED.
We read every one of his books after that one. I think the only book we haven't read yet, is the one proposed to be released later this year. We read the others over, and over, and over again. I will admit though, that I am not a fan of the later series, co-written by his son - those always seemed kinda flat and bland. But the others were full of sparks.
Maybe Clive's books appealed to me because I am a tom-boy type of gal ;-)
Sad news.

But, on the other hand, 88 is a pretty good run on life. If Clive lived any of the adventures his books portray ... he was darned lucky to live that long. Just sayin'.
R.I.P. Clive: you are missed.
